My uncle recently bought a boat with a 1987 engine (that's all the info I know) and he was told he has to put ethanol-free gas in it. Problem is he can't find it anywhere close to where he lives. Does this sound right? Is that really required for an older engine?

Use any gas you can fit in the tank. And high octane is a waste of money.

Around here, it you want or need high octane gas, you have to buy ethanol free.

I burn Shell High-test, because it doesn't have ethanol. My engine is only 2 HP (1978 Johnson), so I don't think the difference in price signifies. The fuel lines probably should be changed if using Gas with ethanol, some of the older rubber fuel lines would deteriorate, or so I am told.

Fuel lines have a service life 5-6 years and a life expectancy of 10 years.

ABYC standards have required ethanol resistant fuel lines since 1985

I have used E10, ever since it came out, in every internal combustion engine I own. Some of my running outboards date back to the 1930's. Never had a problem. In fact, when we first found out about E10 they told us we have been using it for 5 years but didn't even know it.
