Brand new 60hp 4stroke EFI - weird noise question...

Picked up my brand new LUND 1650 Rebel XL with 60hp Merc and observed break-in procedure for the first two hours as per the manual.

If I throttle back quickly from WOT, I hear a loud clicking noise - the same sound you hear when shifting into forward or reverse from neutral.

I don't get this sound if I throttle back slowly. Can't be normal??

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I have a last year model and no. But is it in the engine or the fixing of the motor to the transom ?

the sound comes from the engine -- you know that sound when you engage the gear? Kind of like the sound of gears engaging? Exact same sound.

Its 100% normal as what you hearing is the clutch dog jumping the gear ramps, this happens because gear and pinion slows down when you chop throttle and the prop cannot stop that quick so it overruns the gear ramps.

Will it damage my lower unit?

Over a long period of time it will wear leading edge of the ramps but will not cause a failure. Just slow down earlier....

Re: Brand new 60hp 4stroke EFI - weird noise question...

I am still puzzled why my old motor didn't do this - ever. It doesn't seem right to me for a brand new motor to make this noise when I slow down. I don't have to chop the power drastically.... I can make the noise happen by pulling the power back back smoothly but rapidly.

I spoke to the dealer I bought the package from and he understood my problem and said he would look into it -- sounded like he knew what I was describing, but geeez, this guy delivers dozens of boats. Am I the only one to notice this??

Anyway, he said he'd check with Merc and he called me back and verified that what I am experiencing is *normal*, and that my motor has a "ratcheting clutch". Really?? Is this the correct technical term??

The noise doesn't happen if I pull the power back very gently. which squares with Faztbullet's statement, indeed this is what seems to be happening:

Its 100% normal as what you hearing is the clutch dog jumping the gear ramps, this happens because gear and pinion slows down when you chop throttle and the prop cannot stop that quick so it overruns the gear ramps.

Still doesn't explain why my old motor never did this -- one last thing: is it possible the dealer didn't set up the control cable properly when installing the motor to my boat?

I just purchased a 60 Mercury two weeks ago and it does the same thing. Loud grinding noise when shifting down from full throttle.
Sounds like metal on metal.
Took it back to the dealer.
Told me it was prop-chatter.
