Ive looked all over the place and cannot find what year this is or any diagrams on this engine. I was hoping someone on here could tell me a little info about it. Im posting a lot of pics to help.

I am also having trouble figuring out what this little knob thing is sticking out below the pull start. It has a metal "pin" in it that seems to have a spring behind it. (this is my first outboard , my uncle just got it for me to see if I could get it running).

Also while Im thinking about it... Where do you connect the fuel? Im pretty sure there are screws on the bottom drive for the oil , so it must be a 4 stroke? No oil/gas mix required?
I have had a volvo penta I/O that I was working on but sold it (was my first boat).

There seems like there should be something over the carb to keep crap from getting in there.

Any diagrams or schematics you can link for me would help immensely, maybe a what to know about outboards too?

Thanks guys, you have helped me when Ive asked before and I appreciate it a lot.

Also the bottom fin is kind of messed up (first pic). Do I need to replace the whole bottom portion before I take it in the water (if I ever get it running)
Looks like a bucktooth bluegill had his way with it. =)

That part is called the 'skeg'. You can operate the engine with it as is as long as the housing is not cracked and leaking the oil from the gear case. There are places that can repair it by welding on new material.

That s/n is for a Belgium made engine and comes up as a model:

1025203 MERCURY 1983 25

Parts Listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/676.cfm

Service Manual P/N: 90-92235--1 for s/ns 9390290 and below.

http://santabarbara.craigslist.org/boa/2823285277.html

The knob you are referring to should be the choke and the spigot to the right of it is where the fuel line connects from your tank.

Thank you so much! I see that the carb does not need a cover. I assume the top cover protects it from getting anything sucked in, so thats good news.
and thats good news about the fuel line connector as well! I am very new to boating still and I appreciate all the help guys!
I will try and find that service manual online and if not then hopefully a little closer to me. SB is a bit far but maybe worth it.
I figure with this engine I could put it on a small aluminum boat and get out on the water to fish!

Good to know its still operational as long as its not leaking oil. I will have to make sure there is still some in there and it didnt all leak out!
Thank you very much for the new vocab word as well! SKEG, SKEG, SKEG... GOT IT! =)
again, thank you for your time and helpful input.
