I have been told by my mechanic that my Mercury 650 is dead - no spark and he can't get the cap and rotor needed to fix the unit. My questions are: 1 - is this true? I can get the serial number off the engine (I know it starts with a 3, but I lost the paper I wrote it on) and 2 - In order to replace this engine with either a new one or a used one, I need to find out the weight of the engine to see if the boat will handle it. Are the new units in the same hp range approximately the same weight?

Thanks

Its a little over 200 lbs. And yes, I do believe you can get that cap and roto...... its expensive, but you can get it. try oldmercs dot com. Also, watch Ebay, I see them on there from time to time. good luck

Thanks for the reply, now I have the ball park for weight considerations if I try to replace the engine. I will check oldmercs as soon as I get the complete serial number.
This leads to the next question - I see that Honda makes a 50hp that is in the same weight range - would I see a significant drop in speed with a brand new 50hp vs the older (and truthfully less than perfectly maintained) 65hp Mercury?

Check out the weight, dimensions, and use of your boat.
You might want to get a motor _larger_ than the Merc 65. I've heard lots of good reports on the older 85 hp Mercs in terms of longevity and performance. Obviously, if you have a relatively unstable boat and the 65 was already the "max" rated hp, and you have teenaged boys, you might be better sticking with lower hp, but I've seen lots of boats with larger motors than suggested and they do just fine - especially when loaded.

Bingo - "you have teenaged boys" (but I have my moments).

The boat is a 14' "American"? Not sure of the name, but probably the same vintage as the motor and feels "heavy" in the back. It did rise up at full throtle.

Could I project losing 15-20% of the ommph with an engine that is 15-20% smaller in hp than the current one, considering the age of the engine being replaced and the equal weights?
