Hey guys, long term lurker.

2003 Mercury 40hp 2 stroke is acting up...
when it’s warm, at around 1500-3000RPM it’ll backfire and stutter, but doesn’t stall.
after 3000RPM it seems to plane out and run at WOT great. Then ones I start decelerating back down to the 2500rpm range, it starts misfiring again.
idles and starts fine.

cleaned carbs 3 times, and rebuilt them.
brand new fuel, Rebuilt fuel pump, new spark plugs, all new fuel lines, new fuel filter.

tried disconnecting the plugs 1 at a time and revving the engine up with just 2 out of the 3 plugs, and same thing, misfires at the same RPM range.

question about the timing also - I statically set it to 0 at idle and 24 BTDC at WOT.. but when I rev it up in neutral, I see the timing advancing to the ATDC position... is that normal?

Need DVA tester and check stator output to CDM modules at RPM it misfires

Get/borrow a good meter, get a DVA adapter, hook to grn/grn/wht wires off stator and watch voltage as you slowly increase RPM.If voltage drops or spikes when it misfires stator is bad..
