1979 mercury 7.5 Hp Lower unit exchange

I have a 1979 merc 7.5 long shaft. the lower unit is bad and I wanted to know if anyone knows if I can use other years 7.5 lower units and just change out the shift shaft and drive shafts and it will work with 1997 7.5. Thanks for the input.JJB

the 79 is compatible up to 1985 and down to about 78

the 7.5 and 9.8 are identical with exception of the timing, carburetor, and a few other bits on the power head.

What is the serial # of this 1997 model 7.5 HP.----Or pictures of this motor.----I do not recall a " 7.5 HP " model in 1997

other than the black paint, nothing from the 85 and older is remotely similar to the 86 up product.
