Greetings all,
I have a 2004 Utopia with an Optimax 250 DFI. I removed the engine and jet drive a couple of months ago and had them both rebuilt. I need some help starting the rebuilt Optimax 250 DFI. I don’t have much experience with 2 stroke outboards but have a lot of experience with 4 stroke inboards. What are the steps I would need to do in order to run this engine? I was first planning on running it with a premixed gas/oil mixture off a small tank. I know this is required to prime the oil injection. Is there any thing else I need to do? Does it need to be timed? I am looking for a procedure similar to what you would do on a 4 stroke. This is what I usually do for a 4 stroke V8: add oil, spin the oil pump with a drill to lubricate the top half of the engine (not required), find TDC for piston 1, install distributor with the rotor pointed at cylinder 1, etc. Maybe I should find a shop with diagnostic equipment and let them do it?

The oil is not mixed with the gas on that motor !-----Run to a shop that knows this model of motor and ask for help.----Will save you some coin.----Just not the same as your 4 stroke V-8 engine.

To prime the oil pump, turn the key on and immediately advance the throttle lever 6 times. You will hear the fuel pumps run and the oil pump click for several minutes. This also puts the oiling system into break-in mode for a number of running hours. Wait until this completes before starting (5-10 minutes). It won't hurt to premix your gas at 150 to 1 to lubricate your injectors.
