Testing a Mercury Stator?

Hi guys. I'm thinking this is a simple question about testing a stator, but I couldn't find a CLEAR answer on the forums.
My Question: Can I tst my stator WHILE IT'S ON THE ENGINE? If so, do I HAVE TO disconnect it from my rectifier?

There are ohmmeter tests for Mercury stators. Obviously there are different tests for different motors. What do you have?

Since the rectifier is connected to ground and the battery, the stator will need to be disconnected in order to test it.

Hi Chris, I have three old 1980's Mercs I'm working with. I use the following chart to verify my readings: http://www.outboardignition.com/page39.asp
My main question is this: I don't feel that it is necessary to remove my flywheel and remove the stator just to put it up on a bench to test it, But I would think that because there might be interference from the rectifier, I SHOULD remove the cables from the rectifier to properly test my stator. Your answer confirmed my reasoning. Thanks Chris! One Merc motor has a KNOWN bad stator. One has no spark so I want to rule that out, and the third I believe to be good and want to swap with the known bad stator.

It is always prudent to disconnect the stator before testing, to isolate the possible fault to the stator itself.

Battery CDI ignition motors have 2 wire stators. Two wire stators only charge the battery, via rectified AC current. With the motor running, some AC voltage on the yellow wires will indicate they are working.

ADI motors have more than two wire stators. I have the specs for 6 cylinder motors,if you need them.
