Alpha 1 lower impeller housing

Drive # a530982 Alpha one 1986

Is there a small opening in the rear of the lower impeller housing (opening up into the exhaust chamber)or is the gasket bad?

There's the opening for the driveshaft and water tube. If there's any other openings then the pump wouldn't function properly.
