Mercruiser 170 help please?

There was no starter in it when I bought it and then I realized that there should have been an alternator too. Recently I installed a new starter but its not wired in yet. I know the engine is missing a few parts and pieces to make it whole again. I was wondering if someone could help identify what's missing?

It's not missing an alternator, those engines did not come with a conventional alternator. They used a rotor spinning around the stator like an outboard. It's under that pulley on the crankshaft. There is a water cooled regulator on the port side of the block near the front, just between the heat exchanger and block.

Here is a wiring diagram that will help explain the system.

I have that engine, there is no alternator unless it's added after the fact. (I didn't). Open up the distributor cap and you will see the rotor and condenser.

I don't see anything obvious missing, except everything those wires connect to and what is left of your coolant overflow tank.

Thanks Dons for the input and diagram. I think I have the same one :) Thanks JerryIrons I'm glad you chimed in. I really want to get this boat running and in the water as soon as I can but I am going to take my time and do this one its justice. Assuming the engine will run and the outerdrive works.

I like this engine, it's easy to winterize and on my 19 ft cuddy it goes pretty fast!
