I lost a boot today on the water, almost lost my boat too.

How hard of a job is the change, is it something to attempt on my own or send it to the shop?

Part cost?

Labor cost?

how old of a boat are we talking about? stringer drive, cobra drive? either way to do just a boot on either is not too bad however now that everything else has gotten wet be assured you need more than just a boot. gimbal bearings only get wet once before they start to become junk.

It is an '89 Cobra drive.

What would a work over cost?

Assuming the gears are good and its just a basic routine service it should be around $300. Before you do though ask what the service consists of. Definitely rteplace the impeller and gimbal. Those are cheap and you don't want problems when on the water.

Thanks man..there is my magic number again.

I am going to call where I bought her at, less than 5 hours on the water and had this issue. Not really saying it is their issue, but can see what they can do to help me out if anything.

Re: OMC Boot

I may be communicating the wrong part issue. I looked over the parts and what I have an issue with looks more like a bellow than what I have found as a ?boot?.

The part in questions runs from the inboard to the out drive and resembles a dryer exhaust hose, except it is black and smaller.

Is this the same issues or something else?

What else can I look to find issues with?

When I was trying to get her out of the water, she started right up, but when I popped her in gear she would die.

Thanks for the help by the way, just trying to get ahead of what I might find at a repair shop or an idea of what I can or can?t repair on my own.

The OMC Cobra drive has a bellows (I think more than one, but I'm not sure since I don't have a Cobra). The boot you have found is probably the transom seal for an OMC Stringer drive which is completely different. The big black boot around the outdrive on the transom of my boat is a transom seal for an OMC Stringer. If you have a Cobra it should look completely different & then you're looking for a bellows.
