out drive lifting?

I have a alpha-1 when I put it in reverse the 1 outdrive lifts if I go in the water I can also lift it up but I cannot with the other one?<br /><br />They both lift and lower ok but the one does not lock.<br /><br />What makes these not lift up once they go down?<br /><br />Thanks...

Check valve in pump, release valve in cylinder.

The first place I would look. Not sure if you have a "reverse valve lock" on yours. I know the older drives do. The fluid line from the trim pump will run to a plate that is bolted to the top of your bellhousing (your shift linkage goes there also). When you shift into forward it will open ( in case you hit something with the outdrive at speed, it will flip up instead of breaking off) but when you put it in reverse it will close,locking the outdrive in place.
