4.3 Alpha 1, mercrusier shifting

My in/out drive has started clicking and not going direct into forward, it goes in about 1/3 of the time, some times it takes a second then goes into gear, is this a clutch or shifting spool or maybe an adjustment problem? is it difficult or expensive to repair?

You don't give us any indication as to how old this unit is .Remember ALPHAS have been made since the late 80s .The lower shift cable would be my first area of concern.Shift spools have also been updated on the earlier drives but that is a repair one would only do after a cable replacement anyway.
