I have a 1969 Fabuglas with a 120 hp GM I-4 engine. It has an OMC outdrive. I was wondering if this engine was ever in a car- I would imagine it would help me get basic parts for her at Autozone. Thanks

the 2.5 Chevy was never in a Vega.

1963-1968 or so Chevy Nova (Chevy II) was the only car to use the 2.5 Chev that is found in boats.

Those two engine didn't even resemble each other so you need a new Auto Zone parts guy. The Vega engine was an aluminim block, cast iron head with an overhead cam. The Iron Duke was an all iron pushrod engine. Even the displacements were different.

Nope, the marine 2.5 (and now 3.0) are not and were never car engines. Just look at one in a 1986 or so Buick Century and you'll see the difference, immediately. Hint: The auto 2.5 has exhaust and intake ports on the opposite side of the head from each other (the way God intended). The marine engine has all the ports on the same side, thus making the intake/exhaust manifold a one piece unit.

Try Napa for parts for a Marine 2.5, if you don't want to pay Marina prices.

Might want to reread my post - I said nothing about a 1980's Buick. No intake or exhaust in this pic:

Anyone with a 2.5 or 3.0 in their boat will see that this is the same beast.
Cars never used the 3.0 version, but some USPS postal vans did around 1969/70.

Re: 1969 OMC GM 120hp - ever in a car?

the 'iron duke'2.5 NEVER marinized by anyone in the US.
it was a 151 CID motor prodused by GM but shares nothing with the 153 CID 0r the 181 CID motors marinized by OMC or mercruiser.
the 153 was originally designed as a truck engine back in the late 50'sbut only used in production in the nova and a pontiac that the name escapes me.
AMC used it in jeeps until the 70's.
it was used as a stationay prime mover for various pumps, generators and fork lifts for many years then moved to the 3.0L where it remains to this day.
depends on what your looking for onbasic parts, dist cap, rotor points were all the same.
my 78 OMC 120 used 2 single barrel carbs the same carbs my 61 studebaker lark I towed it with used.
the dreaded old carter rbs.

Howard, i concede to you and the others that the marine 2.5 is the same as that 4 cylinder photoed. I was quoting another long time member of this board, who has more than once, said that the marine 2.5 (3.0) was only ever a stationary or forklift engine. Glad to see it did exist in a car.

Rooooooney, isn't two carbs on a 151cid engine overkill? And when you say "hotrod", are you serious, or are you talking tongue-in-cheek?
