thanks chief!

Fishermark, about the carb, i've heard horror stories about carb rebuilds never working and such. I'm afraid to change something that has always worked so well til this year. what do you mean by giving it attention?

Well, you mentioned you had "messed with the idle screws" - I assume there was a reason you felt the need to mess with the carb? You also mention that it was after you "messed with the idle screws" that you had the issue of it bogging down after extended trolling sessions. It sounds to me like you have messed up the mixture if nothing else.

Oh, yes, I think that was part of the problem. Screwing around with something i knew nothing about, haha. So, yes, I agree it needs some attention.

I'm going to pull this engine from the boat tomorrow. I'm not sure how it bolts up in the back end. I can see the front. What comes out to disconnect it from the back? Anyone have a picture or drawing or some advice. It doesn't show much in my manual.

There are two rear mounting bolts. Don S has posted a picture that shows it well:

Fishermark, thanks so much for the quick response. In the picture below, i circled the rear engine mount (i think) and then I want to just take out the two bolts that hold the front to the motor well 2 x 4 so i can check it for rot and replace it (likely) It's ok to remove the front like that is it not?

I can't tell from your picture... but the general area is correct. Here's one I recently did - this is from the rear - note the area on each side of the bellhousing where the rear mount is:

Yes, pull the engine with the front mount attached. That way you can check the stringer as you mention. Like this:

very helpful fishermark, thanks again. one last thing. Are those mounting tabs in the back the same height as the front engine mount feet or do I need to build something for them to rest on so I don't crush the oil pan?

Ayuh,...

The motor will Sit all by itself,...Just like in Mark's pictures....

I believe your Issues are Fuel Delivery related,... aka; the Carb...

You're ready to pull the Head off the motor, for No apparent Reason,...
Yet,...
You Don't wanna deal with the Carb, that causing your Problems,....

I fail to understand your reasoning.....

Your compression #s aren't all that Impressive,... Your motor might be alittle Tired,..
But shows No reasons for a tear-down either....

Either Rebuild, or Replace your Carb,+ Go Fishin'.......

Re: mercruiser 165 - chevy 250 inline 6

When i had mine all put back together i screwed it down to my trailer floor that is like the one in Marks pic. And ran it before i put it back in the boat, the fuel pump was lazy on the motor so i changed it out made a big difference the way it ran. Was only giving 3 1/2 psi.

Discovered a few other problems as well, needed new wires also.

Reason i posted this ? When it's out of the boat and bolted down you can run it first before you do any work on it.

Just put water to the hose that runs to the t-stat.

This was on a motor that was being transplanted into my boat.

fwiw, my 165 has similar numbers as yours does. granted it could use some freshening up. but i believe it to still be serviceable. if i was in your shoes, engine out and all. if i had a bunch of bread, i'd freshen it up, if i didn't i'd move onto the carb. the 2gc carb on your 165 is a very easy rebuild as carbs go.

My reasoning is that it needs to come out of the boat for some stringer and transom work. Since its going to be out of the boat, i figured it would be a good time to pull the head and look things over. I don't want to spend any money that I don't have to. I don't want to rebuild anything that doesn't need to be rebuilt. I just figure the timing is right. I'll consider all options with the carb. I agree, It is the problem right now. I don't want to rebuild it myself. I think that if it were properly tuned, it would be fine.

Thanks Chief, that makes sense. This is a dumb question, but, I'm not that smart. How do you start it?

Ayuh,... Which is My point,....

What do you expect to See,..??
That a Compression,+ Leak-down tests won't Tell you,..??

If you Insist on tearing it down,....
Fire it up, warm it,..
Then pour a soda bottle full of Water down the throat of the Carb as you keep it running at about 1500rpms.....

That'll clean all the carbon deposits from the cylinders,+ head....
It's a 'ell of alot Easier than scraping the crap off, After you've torn it down...

Good luck with it, whichever way you decide to go...

This is a dumb question, but, I'm not that smart. How do you start it?

Use a Battery to jump wire it,...
Attach a fuel can to feed it,...
Jam a garden hose into the input hose,+ Fire it......

Re: mercruiser 165 - chevy 250 inline 6

Bondo- i appreciate your advice. I've just got a lot going through my head right now. What I'm going to do is pull it and put it on a pallet. Leave it alone for a while and not spend any money on it. I've got a ton of other work to do on the boat before the engine will go back in. 2 or 3 months anyway. I need to spend my money on the strings and transom repairs I'm doing right now. I can just lay my outdrive down on its side with all the gear lube drained out, correct?

in my manual it says to remove the shift cable from the j-clamp on the flywheel. is the j-clamp just something they routed the cable through?
