This must me my month for boating issues...……..:(
Tried to have the hours read from a 5.0 Merc on a 04 Baja that I found. Scantool spits out some bogus number in the tens of thousands of hours. Mechanic says he has never seen anything like this, but thinks the value might have been programmed in there.
Anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

With the right software (MEFI Burn) the hours can be changed. See if its password protected

Was just reading something yesterday about someone saying the scan tool was giving out incorrect info (hours, etc.) on their 2004 Merc 6.2 MPI with a 555 ECM engine model which turned out the scan tool became faulty....Maybe plug the scan tool back in "a few times" to see if it helps or try a different scan tool if possible plus try the scan tool in question on another engine/boat to compare what's going.

The below quote is just a general summarized version of what was mentioned regarding the faulty scan tool for you to see.
With key on, engine off the tool failed to recognize the ECM at all, and couldn't choose between MEFI1, MEFI2, MEFI3 all of which are wrong for my engine, and the scan tool even told me the motor had 670 hours on it (I know it has 150 from earlier successful readings and the concurring dash). Rinda Tech telling me they have never before seen this fault and that the tool "shouldn't misread the ECM type" Rinda got me to send the tool back which Rinda returned the scan tool who agreed it was very faulty and sent me a new one.

Thanks as usual for the info. My wife has simply become enamored with this boat (even though she previously did not like Bajas) and is pushing hard for me to purchase it. I may go ahead and order the adapter that I need and scan it myself, instead of going by what a service guy said over the phone. My current adaptors are for PCM -09 and likely wont work on the 555 version.

I can see somebody lowering the hours, but not putting some crazy number in there. Unless of course they screwed up trying.

If this is a 555 then there is no way to change or alter,

It is a ECM/PCM 555 according to the tech that checked it. I will check it myself as soon as my adapter arrives from Rinda.
I guess the tech's scan tool may have malfunctioned, but I can't believe that he wouldn't have known it at some point.

There have been some software updates from Rinda but unsure if that was the issue

Almost had the perfect boat...……:(
Now, I will have to wait until my adapter comes from Rinda and try myself. If I get the same bogus engine hour dump, it will be a tough decision as whether to buy or not buy this boat.

Called a place that specializes in marine engine pcm's and the tech there said that he had never heard of a unit displaying eratic engine hours.
