I'll somewhat steal this thread, as I just replaced the slave solenoid on a 4.3 fuel injected Mercruiser, from a new to us 2006 boat kept in fresh water. The engine started OK when we drove it during the tests, and failed a week or so after we bought it. It had a bad ignition switch (kept turning past the start position), a fairly bad/corroded battery (replaced with an Interstate) and after I put in the new battery, I had the clicking and only intermittent start so I jumped the large terminals on the solenoid and as it fired up, I replaced it (bought a Mercury branded part at a dealer).
My questions: anyone know how long the Merc brand solenoids usually last, in fresh water (the boat, not the solenoid)? Should I toss the failing one I removed, or can they be resurrected to be a spare? It does not look like it can be opened.
