Not a pro here, but as for which engine it is, I googled mercruiser serial number lookup, entered your number and got this:

MERCRUISER 1997 5.7LX 457L110KS 5.7L 2BBL 5.7LX 4BBL 350 MAG ALPHA/BRAVO

are you changing the whole long-block or just the block? cant simply swap the block without going thru a rebuild
