A buddy of mine gave me a 1977 (I think) evinrude 25hp outboard. It has not been started in years, so I am starting to attempt to get her back in service if possible. I am trying to start with the water pump, but cannot get the lower unit off. I took the 4 bolts on the lower unit off, and the nut off on the back side but that back side will not budge. I have soaked it for a few days, and have about a 1/8" gap on the front side but the back will not budge. I posted the pics of what I have so far, what else can I do. Also put a pic of the info plate on for identification.

Try some heat around the stud area while applying pressure with the wedges. Bump the back of it with a rubber mallet also. Worst case could be the drive shaft splines are stuck in the crankshaft.

i know its not an issue in this case, but where is the shift rod disconnect on that model? id also snug that lower back up and do a compression test, just to get an idea if the motor is worth spending $$ on, and it will give you a baseline for future reference if it checks out ok.

there is an oval plate on the side opposite the tiller handle that allows you to gain access to what i am pretty sure is the shift rod disconnects.

yep, thats the spot! remove the upper bolt completely, dont worry if it falls into the lu area. you will get it back.
but as mentioned....thats not the issue right now.

Remove the bottom screw completely but I don't think that is what is hanging you up at this time.

lol....upper bolt? or lower bolt? i prefer to remove the upper, so i can gently open the coupler a tiny bit ....just so it makes it easier to get the rod back in on reassembly.

i guess I was just wanting to make sure that I had all the pieces holding it together removed and there was not some hidden bolt that I did not know about.

Just to clarify, when I eventually get the lower unit off, the stud will come out with it, correct? In other words, the stud is pressed into the lower unit housing am I right?

It should be threaded in incase you wanted to put a 5" extension on the motor. You may try double nutting the stud and try working it back and forth.

Re: 1977 Evinrude 25hp lower unit removal

tried to double nut the stud and when I tried doing anything it just stripped out the head of the stud. The base is still good and the nut is solid when it is all the way down, but the stud is not tall enough to take them both and not strip out. I am really at a loss. With three days now of heat, pb blaster, wood shims/wedges, plastic spacers and even a metal putty knife to try and force some headway, I have not made it any further than in the pictures. I think it is time to visit the mechanic and see if he can get the dad-gum thing off. any last minute advice?

Bummer. Well, when you get it repaired, that stud should stay in place, and the LU should slide off.
Here's a pic of mine for reference. Good luck.

its not a big deal about the stud, it was worth a shot. I have an appointment tonight to take her up my mechanic. He is going to jerk the lower off and give her a look over since she has not been run in like 25 years and see what shape she is in and see if he can get her to fire for $50 and go from there. The motor is a little big for the little boat she in intended for so I may see about a trade out for a 15 or 9.9. We will see what happens.

so took the motor to the mechanic tonight and first thing he did while i was there before he took possession of it was to do a compression test. I was impressed to see 148lb in both cylinders. He said it will probably be monday before he can get back with me about it so we will see. I was happy to see good compression though.
