I cannot figure out where to put part number 58 in the diagram below.
The water pump repair kit came with two orings. The guy at the parts counter said to go with the one that fits the drive shaft better.
But where does it go?
Should go at the top of the driveshaft in the groove just below the splines; this is to keep water out of crankshaft so it doesn't rust. You do know to grease the splines but not the top of the shaft?

Ok Thanks. I saw the "wear mark" under the splines and figured thats where it goes. The only problem is the old ORing wasn't on the shaft when I pulled the lower unit off. Is it safe to assume the the old oring is still on the power headside of things?
The 1989 model has the driveshaft o-ring mounted in a groove in the crankshaft. It stays there when the driveshaft is pulled out of the crankshaft. I'm pretty sure it's the same for the 1991 model.
Before posting I took the lower unit off and changed the Seals and ORing below the water pump and put on a new water pump. I disconnected the shift shaft from the linkage under the bottom carb before removing the lower unit. It was in neutral position when I pulled the lower unit. When I pulled the lower unit the shift shaft kind of slipped. It is almost like the shift shaft became disconnected from somethingin the foot.
It very well could have backed out. The lower unit took a ride in the back of my truck. I imagine the vibrations could have backed out the shift shaft. I will be pulling the lower unit shortly.
Thanks for the help.
When you have the lower unit off, screw the shift shaft back in and go to the top secret file at the beginning of this forum and look up the shift rod height. Set that and then check the shifting for F-N-R.
