So i am swapping out VRO for a pulse pump, have not done one in a mighty few years. got the pulse pump, i can see where it mounts in the pic, straddling the vacuum outlet which i removed the plug for.

issue- underneath the mounting area about 1" is that brass connection for a hose. I am guessing this was a vacuum also for the VRO pump? if so, do i hook this up to something else, or plug it because the pulse pump will already have vacuum?

If you don't need it for a pulse line, just plug it off.

seems like alot of work when all you need to do to get pulse is bolt the pump on, man thats a much bigger pulse port your using!

I have a 1987 90HP VRO, which I disconnected the oil system and wiring, and plugged off the oil side of the VRO pump.

I'd like to remove that and go to a straight premix/pulse pump. Where did you mount the pump, and what part did you use (pump part number)?

In the photo, that's what mine looks like, with that 1/4" tube being the VRO pulse supply. Did you use that port, or something different?

thanks

You do realize that both the VRO and it's replacement both work off pulses from the crankcase? The VRO pump can be used to pump premix, provided the gasoline component still pumps well. Retrofit should be fairly easy, at least the part of where to connect the vacuum lines. Mounting can be tricky, depending on what replacement pump you use.

Yes; I understand that the VRO operates from the crankcase pulse port/hose, and it's a dual-function unit that pumps both oil and gas, when in service as a VRO motor. I blocked the oil inputs and removed the oil supply paraphernalia. I am trying to find out which pump to use, using the pulse port fitting FORMERLY used by the VRO pump, and to remove the VRO pump completely, running pre-mix. I believe my fuel pump (the fuel pump portion of the VRO unit) is weak, and that's why I'm going to replace it all.

will one fuel pump work for that size motor? I know on the mid 90s 115 i have they normally use the BIG OMS mixer pump, but on the commercial motors of that year with no oil mixing fuel pump they use TWO regular fuel pumps!

this is a 1996 125 commerical motor

I don't REALLY think I need to go that heavy-duty on a 90HP. In fact, the fuel lines are only 5/16" on the 90HP, not even 3/8" like the 200HP. I just need a pump that has in, out, and pulse, and if I have to fabricate a bracket for it to mount where the old VRO pump was; so be it.

Pretty sure you would use the fuel pump from an 88 SPL. The 88 SPL was a 90 with the VRO ( and a couple other features) deleted.

The 88spl pump has the flat flange/2-bolt mounting, whereas I have a fitting for the pulse output on the block. That means it can't just be bolted on there, and I need a pump with a pulse hose fitting to connect to the current hose from the crankcase.

thanks

I could be wrong but the non-vro pump mounting should be there. Both motors use the same part number crankcase. Is it just plugged or blocked off?

I've only disassembled this on a newer 140.

Re: Evinrude 115 VRO swap back to pulse pump, need help!

Right now, I have nothing dis-assembled, so I can't see behind the starter and hose/wiring. I can see the crankcase pulse fitting which the VRO supply hose goes to, but I don't know if there's a double bolt mounting bosses and sealed port that would take the 88SPL fuel pump, as a bolt-on.

Right now, I'm changing out the fuel supply hose from the main tank in the boat, up to the transom splashwell fitting, as it appears very dry and weathered, with hairline cracking. I'm HOPING that maybe I'm suckin' air intermittently, in that fuel hose, and that is the issue with the mystery of dying at random times, without pumping the fuel bulb to keep it running.

thanks
