Ocean Pro fuel pump question

I have a 1996 Ocean Pro 150 that I think the fuel pump has gone bad on. The only way to keep it running is to keep pumping the bulb. It will die in less than a minute if I dont keep pumping the bulb, when I pump it up again it starts right up and runs good for a second and then the same thing. Does this sound like the pump to you guys? And how should I go about fixing it if it is? Or is there something else I need to check before getting into a replacement or rebuild?

1: Be sure you use pre-mix during testing!!
If pump is defect and you are still using VRO, every time priming with the bulb you get pure fuel and no oil!!
Dismantle the air-motor of the pump and check for broken membrane and valve.

Checkout Max Rules there is a flow chart for troubleshooting the VRO pump and other good info. The fuel side can be rebuilt if the middle housing is not damaged. The oil side cannot be rebuilt.

Re: Ocean Pro fuel pump question

Thanks. I am still using the VRO and after pumping the bulb to get it to start twice I got a no oil alarm and shut it off and called Sea Tow. Does anybody know what pump I should order if I decide to start running premix? The VRO pump is very expensive, and since the fuel side is probably bad I dont really trust the oil side with it being 16 years old. I like not having to mix the oil myself but am always worried its gonna leave me stranded.

Re: Ocean Pro fuel pump question

Pumping the primer bulb on that motor fills the vapor separator with pure gasoline. This gas is mixed with oil in the OMS pump. You normally cannot force pure gas to the carbs, so that is not a worry. Are you sure there are no air leaks in the gasoline lines? That would mimic a bad OMS pump. If the motor runs really smokey, that is a symptom of an air leak.

The Maxrules website will recommend a premix fuel pump replacement. You may also repair the OMS pump and plug the oil side and run premix. Of course you could also repair the OMS pump, and run some premix until you see if the oil is still being injected properly.

Your existing pump has gone 16 years you will save yourself $50.00 or so if you buy a fuel only pump and premix. You need to decide if not having to premix is worth it to you. Your engine has monitoring for low and no oil which works. The pump has run 16 years which IMHO is very good and you never had issues with the oil side by the sounds of it.

I am not sure if there is an air leak. The motor is only smokey for just a bit when you first start it up for the day. It was just running like a new one on the way to the fishing hole, after fishing there for two hours I cranked it up and went about 100 feet and it died.

Re: Ocean Pro fuel pump question

I just went out and ran it on the hose and after about 1 minute at idle it died, I pumped the bulb and fired it back up and after about 10 seconds the no oil alarm sounded. It makes me wonder if maybe i do have a air leak. The hose that runs from the pulse limiter has the wire spring clamps on the hose and i can twist the hose on the limiter with one finger pressure, and this is the same with the line coming from the VST tank also. Most of the hoses in that area are oily and wet, they dont seem to have anything dripping from them but they are always wet. I cant see where anything is leaking. Any ideas?

The pulse limiter drives the OMS pump. I recommend you replace that hose and any others that seem soft or bad.

Well I took the pump off and took it apart going by the manual and this is what I found. I was very careful taking it apart so I dont think I did it during disassembly. I assume that this is the cause of my problems. I turned it inside out to get a better picture. Does this look like my problem?

Yes, sure. Get the repair kit as shown above, at maxrules.com, put the new diaphragm in and go. Should only cost about 50 bucks US.
Still way too much for that part....
