I have this 175hp evinrude ficht motor. I have new controlls and a system check gauge that i am using off another boat. I am unsure if the motor needs both a fuel line and a return line. i know it has both for oil. I have a new tank with the two prong plug and i think i am ready to go. I think i know where to up the (+) for the battery but im not to sure where to put the ground. and last is... there is a hose that looks to be cut and capped on the other end. my knowledge of motors like this is not good at all.

I am unsure if the motor needs both a fuel line and a return line.

It only needs a single fuel line to the motor from the fuel tank.

I think i know where to up the (+) for the battery but im not to sure where to put the ground. and last is...

There is a bolt just in front of the fuse box on the starboard (right) side of the motor to attach the ground directly to the block.

there is a hose that looks to be cut and capped on the other end. my knowledge of motors like this is not good at all.

That is for a water pressure guage. Just cap it off or get a plug to put in the hole, or get a water pressure gauge. It is not a required item.

Awesome. Thanks for the response. I hope to rig it up outside and fire it up on Sunday. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions.

I did NOT. I ran the fuel and oil lines and then ran power to it and turned it over. I had water from the muffs just in case it would work. I turned the key once and could hear the fuel pump working, the system check guage beeped with all the lights on. Once all the lights cleared I push the key in to choke it and I didn't hear a click I normally would. I turned it over a bunch of times only getting it to "pop" a couple times. It never wanted to run.
So I'm not to sure what to do next. I never hooked the control cables thinking they wouldn't need to be. Is there a manual choke i can do?

You better get a factory service manual and read up on how the FICHT system operates.

There is no choke and no wiring for a choke on the motor.

Did you bleed and prime the oil system first as explained in the manual?

Did you prime the fuel system and get the air out of the rails and the injectors before attempting to start the motor? If not and you allowed the electric fuel pump to run dry, you may have expensive problems sometime in the future.

These are not your Dad's fishing motors any more.

As seahorse mentioned there is no choke. These motors are fuel injected.

I got lucky on a project motor I had last year. It was the same as yours just a 150 instead of a 175. It fired up pretty easily.

The only thing I had to do with mine was clean a small amount of corrosion off the crank position sensor.

Were you getting any fuel into the cylinders?

Were you getting any oil into the cylinders?

When it poped a couple of times was there any smoke or anything coming out of the exhaust?

I wasn't getting any spark on my motor. That is was led me to the crank position sensor.

Re: Project Evinrude Ficht - 175

I'm mostly sure it was getting gas. The oil primer ball was very hard and after un hooking the lines there was oil in the in up to the oil supply. There was smoke coming from the exhaust when it popped. I primed the fuel and know fuel was getting to the motor. But I'm unsure how to remove the air from the rail like seahorse had said. If there was no fuel in the line would the fuel pump turn off? Or would it just continue to run?
Where the fuel line enters there is what I would call a fuel filter. Should I take that off and fill it with gas? Or is it a water separator?

I could hear a ticking when turning it over as if I could hear the plugs sparking.

Get the OEM shop manual before you smoke the motor.

Thanks for the advice there Champ. 5,017 post of telling people to get a manual. This is why I'm posting on the Internet. Save yourself some time and never post that ever again to anyone.

RendezvousMAN....they mean well.

The clicking noise you heard when you were cranking the motor was likely the injectors. At idle it is actually the loudest noise come from the motor (with the prop in the water of course)

You need to confirm if you have spark and compression.

As they say you need three things for a motor to run. Compression, Fuel and Spark. In this case you also need oil to keep things working.

To prime the oil system, unhook the "RETURN" line and pump the bulb on the "TO MOTOR" line until you get plenty of oil (use a cup or other container to catch it) out without any air bubbles.
