Has anyone here tried hydraulic propshaft straightening on the boat? Is it worth it? Does it work?

Have a machine shop do it unless you don't mind wrecking a prop shaft.

A machine shop will use a hydraulic press to straighten, but it's not a DIY job, unless you have a press, "V" blocks, dial indicators/micrometers and the experience, etc.

Not a job for the inexperienced but can be done with good success by the right person with the correct equipment.

Just read a post regarding "Quickstraight" On the boat straightening tool.

Don't know if intended for mechanically inclined diy or as a machineshop tool.

I looked at their website ... it appears to be a fairly expensive set of equipment and clearly not a paying deal to just do a few propshafts and requires some knowledge (ability to setup/use a dial indicator, hydraulic ram, etc.) Not a DIY deal at all. They don't show a price on their website, which should tell you something, but I found a post elsewhere suggesting it was ~ $1000. I would have a lot of concerns about not removing the propshaft and straightening it in place (i.e. what damage could occur in the gearcase from the bending load placed on the shaft?). Some things are a better idea not this one. Not too impressed.

I remember your first thread about the problems of the motor,What motor was it? and have you looked at new or maybe a used shaft.I have had things straighted nothing on a outboard but they were never really right again. So I wouldn't have any faith in getting anything straightened that is a component Of a drive with that RPMs

Re: Prop Shaft Straightening

Its an 1989 150xpE150STLCEM. The only reason I am looking at it is as a temporary fix so that I dont completely ruin the lower unit, while deciding if the rest of it can be fixed. After looking at the prop I can see a bit of run out, but no gouging, just a grease mark that runs around the outside. I know the propshaft is only a few hundred dollars, and looking at the rest of whats wrong with the motor, I want to have the opportunity to fix those things and possibly wait until later in the season to see if its worth holding onto.

I do appreciate all the information I am getting from these forums and am hoping that I can utilize it and share it with others here.

Re: Prop Shaft Straightening

Just another note. As well as straightening you should also consider balancing it as well.

The balanceing is a good idea if you go that way.If you check on pricing of straighten and balance could you post the costs?
With a gear case I recently tried to have the dog and F gear lugs resurfaced,The shop reminded me on the gears and dog both lug insets on the gears have to be taken off the exact same amount same with the dog. They had two mating surfaces,I did it that way to save $$ 3 shops later it would cost more to machine them than buying new @ 260 or so each.Got the whole set new on ebay for just less of 200. took lots of emails and time but it made me happy!!
