I am looking for an electric starter bracket to add to my 1963 Johnson 18hp FDL-17 recoil start. I've seen brackets on Ebay but I'm not sure if any of them will work for me since I'm not positive where or how the starter mounts. If anybody could post pics of a 1963 or similar 18HP with electric start it would be greatly appreciated. Or even if someone could tell me...does it mount on the port or starboard side of the motor? Thanks for any help.

I don't have a picture of the bracket on the motor, but I do have a bracket off my 65 model FD-19....it may be Monday before I can get out to the shop and get you a picture. I actually got the bracket and starter off a 70's model 20 hp. Standing in front of the motor it mounts on the right side. If someone else does not get you a picture I will Monday.

Brad's outboard motor emporium just happens to have a 1965 18hp sitting on a stand with a starter motor/bracket waiting for an impeller/carb service and a photograph to be taken for a lad who wished he was fishin.

Thanks to both of you for that information. At least now I have some idea what I'm looking for. I just wish finding a starter and bracket would be as easy as having my questions answered on here. :D Thanks again for the quick replies.
To flintcreek: If you could possibly post a pic of the bracket you have off the motor that would help me a lot too I think.

Well I will try to load pictures....I have one of the outside like you see in the pictures mounted on the motor, one of the backside and one of the casting number on the bracket. The casting number is 126256. Hope you find one. The brackets are different, but the starters are the same on motors up to 35 hp and 1982 model, maybe even later, but I did the switch and put a starter off a 18 hp 65 model and mounted it on a 82 model 35 hp.

Thanks flintcreek !!!!. Those pics you posted showed me just what I need. I think I read somewhere that the starter and bracket come as one unit. Does it seem like yours is like that? I have been looking for just a bracket and have ignored any that showed a starter with it till I was sure I knew exactly what bracket would fit. I didn't wany to get stuck with the wrong bracket and then have a starter I couldn't use also. I'm gonna have to look at starters and brackets now. Again....A huge thanks to both of you guys.
P.S. Any chance you could count the teeth on that starter and let me know how many ????

The motor I'm working on doesn't have the starter hooked up, I could ask the owner if he'll sell the starter/bracket?

When you say its not hooked up, does that mean there is no solenoid, wiring, switch, etc with it? I had an older Johnson or Evinrude electric start some years back and if I remember correctly it had a separate box with the solenoid in it. What's with the motor you're working on? Also I'm wondering how expensive shipping would be.

Hey Wishiniwuzfishin,

A couple of months back I bought an electric starter bracket for my 18hp Evinrude I'm restoring from this fella in Texas. He said he had a couple of use electric starter brackets and some new. Have bought a couple things from him in the past and he is a honest and a helpful guy. Hopefully he still has some brackets and can help you out.

I have one used one left, $75.00 including shipping. new ones are 225.00
