I have a 25hp Johnson, the tiller mount is broken. Can I remove just the steering bracket, or do I have to remove the entire mounting assembly?

Hi there welcome to Iboats my manual says you have to take off the powerhead to get to get to the throttle control. You should really get a manual for your motor on ebay or here if you dont know what your doing

you don't take off the power head . First remove the exhaust covers at the bottom of the pilot tube, also take the rubber mount off the exhaust housing. You then have to loosen three nuts that fasten to three rubber mounts. 2 on the side, one in front. there is an access area to get to the front one. Next remove the throttle arm from inside the motor. With a little jiggling, you should be able to remove the head, exhaust housing and lower unit (in one piece) from the transom and steering assembly

I've changed tiller brackets on a '56 fastwin and a '99 30hp johnson and did have to take off the powerhead on both. Since the powerhead is sitting on top of the bracket, I don't see how it could be done without removing the powerhead. I'd be absolutely shocked if you didn't have to remove the powerhead to remove and replace that bracket. Then again, I've been wrong before...... Either way, removing the powerhead is no biggie. Nice motor, BTW. One of the lightest 25's ever!:)

You do not need to remove the powerhead on the '99, but do on the '56. The '99 has an opening in the front of the bracket to allow you to slip a wrench down in there to access the front & center mount... This old 25 does, too.

I see there are three nuts to remove, but it seems to be stuck. If I remove the throttle linkage will it come free?

Yes, the throttle linkage on the port side needs to come out...

Being that the rubber mounts are somewhat compressed into place, it'll take a little horsing to get things apart. With the bottom end undone, pull back and up on the lower unit, tilting the motor way from the swivel and clamps. The two side uppers should pull out with a pop. Then lift the motor up to free the upper front...

by bottom end you mean the braces at the bottom right? Looks like I am going to need a thin wall socket to get them out...

yeah, and a regular 1/4th inch drive socket should fit in there. I think the bolt heads are the same size as the 4 screws on the lower unit

I believe the heads on those bolts are either 3/8 or 7/16. Two recessed, and two on the port side.

I got three of the four bolts out on the bottom end, as usual, the fourth one rounded off the head. Took your advice and picked up 1/4 in drive socket from Northern Tools. I had to grind some of it down to fit in the recess.

Reckon I will set up the drill press and drill the bolt head out on the fourth one.

The first long bolt had plenty of oxidation on the threads, I am lucky the bolt did not twist off. Really bad engineering on sinking in 3/8" head bolts.....

I hope you get lucky...the mounting bolts/studs usually shear off due to corrosion if they've been any where near salt water.

Hi, i've got the same problem as yours...i used a tig welder to weld an aluminium ring, without removing anything...and it works good...try to find someone with a tig welder, it will be the cheapest solution.

Ha !

I'll be danged if I am going to let this thing get the best of me. I have been working on outboards since I was a kid (53 now). I only pulled of the mounting stuff once, that was in power mechanics class in high school ( taught by the venerable ex-marine Ross Smith ). It was a Gale - it had been taken apart and put back together many times so all the stuck stuff had been fixed long before my time.

Any way - I set up my drill press and drilled a small starter hole dead center, then did the progressively larger bit until I got to the lockwasher.

Then I dropped back a size and drilled the neck out, used a punch to get things going.

I will drill out the rest of the bolt while the mount is at the welding shop....

Thanks for all your help !!!

Looks like you got lucky with the lower mount as only the top part of the bolt twisting off giving you something to grab onto to unthread it from the mount. The bolt is stainless and should be replaced with a marine grade stainless. It should be available from your dealer.

Happy Ending !

Got the part welded, put the motor back together, took it out - yeah!
