I cant for the life of me figure out what this spring hooks to on my 1989 15 hp evinrude. The spring is connected to a red plastic part I believe is called str pawl&spring part # 0391105.Right now the end of spring is in with the rope on my starter pulley. What does that red plastic part do.

It's part of the recoil starter lock-out system. It's to prevent starting the motor in gear, with the throttle advanced.

Do you know where the long end of the spring is supposed to connect.

Maybe this will shed some light on your mystery spring.

I new you would come through bktheking. Thats my spring. But on my motor it will not reach that post sticking up on the cup guide like the picture shows. Last time I changed my starter rope I probably didnt get the cup guide positioned correctly. I have to fix my starter spring anyway, so I will try to get it right.

No worries, that's why I keep the pics I took of these motors.

Then your starter cup isn't locked in properly. There is it a tab at the bottom which lines up with a hole in the lower cowl right beside the spot where the starter bolt threads into. Rotate the cup and lock it in place, then the spring will sit against the metal piece in the picture.

Re: mystery spring 15 hp evinrude

Hi all

I took starter assembly out and found two things wrong. I didnt have the cup positioned correct (thats why my mystery spring wasnt right), and also the end of the starter spring wasnt hooked into the slit on the cup. I must have screwed these up when I put new rope on 6 months ago. Surprised it worked this long. All is well now thanks to your help especially bktheking. I am ready to order new cam roller and am debateing on whether to order coils also, this is 1989 motor and these are original coils that have given me problems before(I think), still not sure about getting shocked with plug wire.Any suggestions.
