Converting 25hp Johnson from tiller to cable

I'm a new poster, so please forgive whatever ignorance I display. I've done a little searching and can't find the answer so I'll post the question here: Is it possible to convert a 1973 25hp Johnson from tiller control to cable control? I want to do that so that I can set up a stick-steering system to control the boat from the front. Immediate questions are: a) does the tiller need to be removed? b) does the bottom portion of the cowling need to be replaced with something that will allow cable access?, and c) any suggestions on a particular conversion kit? you will need this conversion kit, the tiller can stay on if you like, i always leave mine.

i assume this is manual start.

you will need the stick steering kit, and transom conversion kit.

Thanks! That's what I was wondering about. I bought the old boat, motor, and trailer for $300. Motor runs like a sewing machine. Problem is, I can't get my wife to go out in the boat much anymore, hence the problem with the bow riding up. Looking at the photos of your boat and conversion explained alot of questions I had. I am doing the same thing w/ the same motor!! Is there any linkage that needs to be added to the shift or throttle on the engine for the cables to attach??

if they are not on the motor, you need these metal brackets for the cable to clip into.

Thanks, and about the steering.... what size linkage do I need that goes from the motor to the rod that goes thru the transom? Is the linkage something that is universal or do you need a certain size for different motors?
