Hey all.

I'm beginning to look into a small issue with my boat(1981 rinker, with 80's-ish Johnson).

It seems that it idles a little high in neutral.. I don't have a tach, but it sounds ~300-500 rpm higher than when it is put into gear. What is the simplest way to adjust the idle speed down? Is there an adjustment by the throttle handle?

Note* I don't have any type of manual and have little to none experience with boats. So I may just take it some where if things are complicated(and the reason I haven't spent $150 on manuals).

Really not enough info in the post. modle number of the engine would tell the year that I would guess to be mid to latter 80's. Idle speed in neutral will be higher than in gear. Idle is set under the hood and should be done in the lake so the boat sits at opperating depth. you can set them out of the lake on a hose but it is an educated guess. The only way to know what the idle rpm is would be with a tach. Approx 650 in fwd

Model number for the motor is: J90TLCCA

Looks like a 1988 johnson vro

Look online at places like e-bay and buy a manual. I bought one for my 87 90 hp e-rude for 12 bucks on e-bay. lets face it it's the same engine that you have, I'm not home or i would e-mail you the specs.....someone here will I'm sure before I get home..

remove throttle cable from engine, you have an idle speed stop screw, in the water, adjust you idle in gear, so that it keeps running. now adjust cable to the motor, without moving the motor linkage. the motor is going to idle higher in neutral, than in gear.
