What say ye Outboard Gurus? To use gasket sealant? or to not use gasket sealant? That is the question...

I've been getting mixed responses from different mechanics/shops/DIYers. Some say RTV Gasket Sealant isfine to use in addition to the gasket itself. Others say use only the gasket itself, no sealant. the 1 johnson outboard shop in town said to use only the gasket and dawn dish soap to help with the install of thermo/water pump... What do ya'll think???

Nope, water pump gaskets go on dry. You could use a sealer, but that is going to make the job of getting the old gasket off a real PITA for the next person to do the job.

There is also the likelihood that an sealer on the gasket will allow it to slide while the screws are tightened, rendering it a 'leaking gasket'....

Never used a sealer, never will.
