Pipe Dope on the TT cylinder and cap.

Dont judge me too hard on this. My question is straight up. I replaced the seal and scraper on my tilt trim cylinder. I assembled it and they do not leak. However I did not replace, I reused the O ring on the cap. Now I have a new leak. It is coming between the cylinder and the cap. The O ring I guess. Can I use pipe dope or teflon tape in addition to the questionable O ring. I need the boat running tomorrow otherwise I would get a new O ring . I sure dont want to drive that tilt rod pin in and and have to take it out again.

As stated I needed that motor up and running. I used a nitrile O ring from my collection. I stretched it out on a soda bottle.Although it was a bit thicker than the original one it still allowed me to tighten down the cap. So all is good for now. Up down up down ect and no leaks. I used a minimal amount of pipe dope on top of two wraps of teflon tape both of which were held back towards the top of the cap in order to keep dope or teflon debris from getting into the cylinder.

Sounds good to me. I find those o rings unusual sizes to match up for a cheapie at engineering shops but maybe you will have more luck there, as here in New Zealand we use metric stuff more- as a lot of our machinery is ex Japan

no you cant use teflon tape to seal an o-ring

O ring sizes and o-ring gland sizes must match. the fact that you had the wrong O-ring means it was most likely cut on the threads

So this one has come back to me. The O ring failed and leaked fluid from around the cap.Fortunately the rod pin was much easier second time around.Odd thing was that it worked well for about two weeks, just enough time to think I was a smart fella. Moral of the story. Use OEM parts .
