My father just bought a boat with a 1988 Evinrude 9.9hp on it and we have been having problems getting it started. Engine will start but spits/sputters and stalls after about 10 seconds. Wondering if somebody can explain or, if you have an owners manual, send pics of the starting procedures. It also doesn't help that the decals on the choke, the other knob on the front, and the throttle arm are all worn off, so we have no idea where they need to be in order to successfully start the motor. Any input is appreciated, Thanks!

#1 Pump the primer ball on the fuel line until hard.
#2 Turn the throttle toward fast as far as it will go.
#3 Pull the choke out.
#4 Pull until it starts.
#5 push choke in when the motor starts to slow down.
#6 If the motor dies push choke in and restart.
It will be a little trial and error but this should get you started.

Dumb followup question, Which direction is fast on the throttle, we've got no markings on ours?

Can you look into the throttle body? Fast is the direction that opens the throttle butterfly.

Facing forward with left hand on top of handle, rotate your wrist towards your body.
