I noticed alot of gas built up in the bottom of my motor casing. So i investigated and found that one of the black plastic gas fitting to the top carb had a severe crank in and gas was leaking from it. I removed it and was left with a small brass fitting with grooves in it. I cant seem to find where to order part, what part number it is, or any tips on how to put a new one onto that fitting. Here is a picture of the fitting i am referring to, any help?

Kind of looks like a plastic fuel fitting that has been molded to brass by the factory and press fit into the carberator housing.............probably not a replaceable item, Tohatsu wants you to replace the whole carberator housing or the carberator itself.

If the brass fitting is long enough and is still tightly pressed into the housing, I would simply adapt a piece of rubber fuel hose to fit by applying a screw type hose clamp until the rubber fuel hose constricted enough to seal onto the brass fitting and stay in place under fuel pressure..................call it good enough..............Don

Re: Tohatsu M40C Caburetor part question

Sky,

Whan you talk about the top carb... and are referring to a 40C, I'm confused. The 40C (2-cylinder) has only one carb. Now a 40D (3-cylinder) has 3 carbs. Regardless, it sounds like you are talking about a crankcase vent. The brass fittings with plastic nipples are used on a number of Tohatsu motors, including some of the newer 4-strokes. If it is the plastic elbow with a 5mm brass tube, I think you will find that it gets pressed in. That can be replaced by gently tapping the new one in with a mallet. If that is what you are talking about, you would order 393011370M, L NIPPLE, $2.63, from any dealer, including me. Be aware that in some applications, such as between the front and back halves of the 40C on the stbd side, a check valve is also needed. Early motors had the check valve incorporated in the forward elbow fitting. Current elbows don't have the check valve, so if that is your application, you would want to also add 393011600M, LINE CHECK VALVE, $1.50, and make sure it gets installed in the correct direction.

Re: Tohatsu M40C Caburetor part question

Paul, thanks for the response. I bought this engine about a year and a half ago. It had no serial plate or model number plate on it. All the guy knew was it was a Tohatsu 40hp (which he could has been wrong). It only has 2 cylinders (two spark plugs) and it has 2 carbs. So i assumed it was a 40C and 40hp. Here are some pictures of the motor and the part in question. If you could help me figure out the model and away to order this part from you i would be very thankful.

Here is a few pictures of the motor (if you need anything else to help with model # let me know)

Re: Tohatsu M40C Caburetor part question

That's not a 40C... From the photos, it looks like it could be a 45A, 50C, 60A or 70A. It's older than dirt, but seems to be very well preserved. Many parts will be very rare. Do you have the upper cowl (cover)? Does it have a horsepower number on it? The model/serial tag should be in the area of the transom clamp assembly.

The part that you need is the fuel inlet nipple for the carb. They are typically not sold separately from the carb, but may be similar to other L nipples used on Tohatsu motors. It is a press fit into the aluminum casting. I would have your dealer call Tohatsu at 214-420-6440 and ask to see if they can come up with something. It's possible, maybe, that the 393011370M L NIPPLE will fit, but I have no way of knowing that without taking measurements of the brass tube diameter at the carb. If the OD of the brass tube is about 5mm, you may be in luck. Pulling the old one out without damaging the carb may be a challenge, as will be pressing in the new one.
