Hi Guys! I decided to start the new thread here.
I bouth the new rig (16 feet Starcraft SS, bowrider) with 40 hp Force on the back. The PO said it was not running. On the motor is says Force by Mercury, so I figure it is 1992-1999, maybe some help on the year?

I have checked the compression and it appers to be in the 135 range on both cylinders. Starter works and turns motort freely. At this point it is not connected to the gas tank and I did not want to start it without asking you guys for the proper procedure.
So I have reinstalled the sparkplugs and reconnected the wires. Now what? Just connect the fuel line and try starting it?

Also one more question, as you see from pictures there is no air filter on the carb - should not there be one?
Aslo just curiosity, is taht Mercury lower end, or Force, Iknow at some point they started putting Merc Lower ends on this motors, but not sure when.

Also, what do you guys think about reliability of this motor?

Thanks a lot!

There is no air filter on the carb. To find the year there should be a number on the motor for example I have 1990 50hp the number is 507x90d. as far as starting it. if you put new plugs in and have everything hooked up right then I would make sure your gas is mixed properly and give it a try. if it was sold to you as not running I wouldnt expect it to start. start trouble shooting from there. Spark? fuel? Good luck and have fun

First thing I would do would be to get a service manual.

If you are mechanically inclined, you should have no problem in keeping the motor running for many years. It's a very basic proven design, however, it doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles like the newer models.

I am looking for the service manual now. Bells and whistles are not always a good thing, keep it simple.

Do I have to run it on the muffs or I can just put it in the bucket of water, I just want to try strating it.....?

Do you mean taht there should not be one? I can see the thread for the bolts to hold something in the carb air intake....

There shouldnt be one. I dont know why but have never seen one. it is much better to put the leg in a barrel over running the muffs.
