Good morning,
I have a 1994 Bayliner with 1994 Force 120hp outboard - Problem, It's stuck in Forward weather I put it reverse or forward. When I do put it reverse, I can spend the boat up. It starts in forward. The cables are moving at the engine. Any thoughts what is wrong? Any help will be great.. Thank you

You say the cables move at the engine?
The 94 used 2 different cable/ shifter setups.
Need to know what kind of shifter and what connections at the motor.
Pics work best

You have the later Mercury shifter.
Take the linkage off at the motor and try to shift by hand.

Then if that doesn't work, the linkage is probably bound up at the front of the drive
where the rod goes through the seal.

Up to 94, including 94 they used Force drives.
95 they used Mercury Both good drives.
The shift rod on the Force can get stuck and not allow shifting.

Ok Update ----- I took all the cables off the motor and the shift rod moves freely. I don't think it's connected to anything. Does anyone know where it could have come unconnected and must have be in the forward position when it came unconnected or something broke?

The rod that goes to the lower unit.
There is a bend at the bottom, that's where it connects to the shift rod in the lower unit.
Make sure that they are connected.
If they are? then you need to drop the lower unit and take the front plate off and see if it broken/ disconnected.

Fill out the signature and add a location.
You might be close to someone who can help?

Thank you,

I will drop the lower unit today and check if I can see anything broke or disconnected. I do know the shift rod is connected to the lower unit.(where you disconnect from to pull lower unit off ) I checked that. I hope it's just disconnect in the lower unit. I will drop and update.

Try removing the plate that the shift rod goes through.
The plate is long with 7 bolts.
4 hold the pump and 3 the plate.
Be VERY careful as the plate can break easily if you try to pry up.
Lift from where the pump area is.
Look at the parts diagram and see what your removing.
The center is a lot thicker and less prone to damage.

Pull up on the shift rod and see if it's connected??
Unless something has broken and shot through the side of the drive??
Then you probably won't see any damage?

Ok, the shift rod is not connected inside the lower unit. I'm not 100 percent sure how to reconnect the rod inside the lower unit. Could you guide me through that process? Thank you Jerry

You take the cover off?
The shift rod does it have threads on the end? It should.
It screws in to a bracket that rides on the propshaft.
You need to look deep inside and see if you can locate the hole.

If not then disassemble it.

Get a manual, a factory manual.
The aftermarket ones don't cover enough.
