Hi everybody, new member here and I'm not sure how to go about asking this so I'll probably ramble on, so apologies in advance. Anyway I'm looking for a 50-60hp motor for my skiff, the old one gave up the ghost and I was wondering if anyone can suggest older models to stay away from and ones that i should lean towards in general. There's not much in my price range but i did see one on Craigslist thats an old evinrude 48spl from 1988 (he says Johnson but the model # pulled up Evinrude, i know one company is/was the owner of the other so i guess thats why) but he's selling it for $900 and says it runs good but no controls or wiring harness (but I think my stuff from my previous motor, 1982 50hp evinrude, will fit?) Should I keep looking or maybe look into this? Thank you for any help

I love my 87 48spl. very basic. CDI2 power pack, separate charge coil, ignition sensor and stator under fly wheel, basic carbs with no idle screws. must check compression, these years motors run high, mine about 145psi (some say thats high check with another gauge, but shop i got it from also said 145).

Yes they are high on the compression.----If you buy that 48 SPL you can use spares off your 82 model.
