Re: Safety chain question

Here in Ontario it's law to cross the chains and no s-hooks allowed.

Re: Safety chain question

Just as an extra safety precaution I always use a "locking" device on the lever for the ball clamp rather than a pin of any sort so there is no chance of a pin falling out on the highway & losing your trailer. And also when the truck & trailer are parked & you are out on the lake it is more difficult for someone to steal your trailer.:)

Re: Safety chain question

Well this is interesting. I used to pull around 16 foot utility trailer. I never heard of crossing the chains. I'm glad mai resurrected this 7 year old thread. Yet another thing to add to my list before I take my boat out for it's first trip.

Re: Safety chain question

For the sake of discussion, has anyone ever had a trailer disconnect from the hitch?? As many times as I have pulled a trailer, I keep thinking of what to do if the trailer gets loose.

My father did once that I remember. He was moving the Boat/Trailer just for maintenance of the yard and since we just pulled PM on the trailer as well. He pulled the boat out of the yard and was just driving it around the block in the neighborhood. He actually did not hook up the chains since he was only going around the block. He made the 2nd turn and was pulling away when he noticed the boat in the R/V mirror. He actually had to back the Blazer up and allow the boat to hit it so as to not damage anyone else's property. He got extremely lucky as it just put a hole in the tailgate just less than 2 inches from the back glass. Learned a valuable lesson that day.
