Mercury has the bearing assembly lube available - lubricate the crankshaft ends, seals, O rings and pistons with lots of undiluted outboard oil just before assembly.

2 cycle oil up the bores, rings, main bearings. I use grease on the cork seal, oring seals and shims. Locktite on the distributor pully bolt and the outer flywheel bolts. Permetex #2 on the water jacket bolt thread

On the bottom two crankshaft seals there is a space of about 1/4" between them, fill that space with marine lube, it will help keep the seals like new and also stop any water from getting in. When you put the block back together use a thin application Yamabond 4 and your old cork. Using a new one, assuming this is your first rebuild, there is a change you could pinch the new cork if it's not 100% on center, the old one will fit in with no problem. I also used black silicon on the rear water gasket and the Yamabond on the intake ports just to make sure they're sealed. Do not open your exhaust covers unless you know there is a problem. If there is no leak now you have more of a change of creating one by opening her up that just leaving the old seals there.

In a hand pump oil can I mix outboard motor oil with just an ounce or so of that thick STP Oil Additive stuff that's like thick molasses. It makes the oil thick and sticky and great for assembly and general lubrication, and it stays on great! I use it all the time. Good Luck!

I really appreciate all the advice, i think it's just great! Where does this cork gasket come into play...i don't recall seeing any cork on disassembly (is it between the carankcase cover and block?)..and yeah, i knew not to open that exhaust baffle section..LOL..it takes extreme patience to get that outer cover off, which i did for cleaning purposes...let me know about that cork though...and thanks again for some great advice...

Keep your needle brg lube in the fridge until you are ready for assy. That keeps is stiff enough that your needles don't fall everywhere.

Yes...and use a new one.

That advice came from the famous ClamsCasino, for inlines I trust him. I did this on my rebuild and she hasn't leaked one drop.

Hey Monk, the cork gasket fits in the groove in the front cover. Lots of good suggestions here. With the cork gasket I actually glue it in place with plastic adhesive before I assemble. The cork can be fitted to the groove and stretched if necessary to reach the full length. Some of the gasket sets I have received the cork has shrunk. By gluing it in place before hand you can grease it for assembly and not have to worry about the gasket squeezing out. Use the plastic cement sparingly, you are not trying to create a seal with it, you are holding the gasket in place. On Assembly the gasket will compress. The old gasket really should not be re used as it will have hardened and will not form a seal when compressed, just my 2 cents.

Where ya been dave??? Just a note, the Sierra/Mallory cork gasket has a sticky side that you pull the covering off so you wont need glueand are longer so you have to cut them to lenght.
