As a 1st grade teacher, this type of thing scares the sh** out of me. We have an open campus, no security checks, and something like this could easily happen at any school in the county. Someone could walk into any classroom on just about any school around here and open fire before anyone knew they were there.

Something that really bothers me is the amount of attention this gets from the news. Want to be noticed? Remembered? Make a statement? Shoot up a school and kill kids. I think they should make policies never to mention the person's name and give them no recognition or fame (if you can call it that) for what they've done. Talk about it, the loss, and the victims, but leave the killer nameless and forgotten.

I think it's time to put armed guards at every school, they don't have to wear tactical clothes or carry long guns, side arms would work being concealed of course. We can't always stop this at the source, we need some type of stop gap. By installing guards they could draw attention long enough for police to arrive, it should not be put on the teachers shoulders to provide security. "These teachers were brave enough". I know it would come down to money. But if all the federal buildings have security why not the schools?.

I wasn't going to comment on my theories on this, but what some folks are preaching has nothing to do with the cause of these tragedies.

We need to do, as a nation, a better job of detecting and treating mental illness. Only sick people do this.

EDIT: Oh, and hug a teacher today. Those teachers died trying to protect their students.

This happened about a half hour from me an I have a few friends in the area. Proximity doesn't change what happened, but it is truly devastating. To think someone has it in them to violently kill that many innocent people is horrific enough, but when most are 6 years old... Words can't describe it. Prayers to them all affected!

Re: Latest Mass Shooting

Not too long ago, we had "active shooter training" at work where one of the specialist from the police department came in and went through the history of these types of attacks, what the law enforcement has learned, and what we as potential victims should do in the event of an active shooter at our work place.

It was a chilling and frightening session to sit through.

The officer explained that law enforcement learned a lot with the Columbine tragedy and changed their engagement protocols accordingly. It seems like these things happen and are done so quickly that law enforcement does not often get a chance to have a positive impact.

I think with this incident in Newtown, law enforcement will realize that what they have done so far is still not enough, and look for new ways to prevent and thwart these types of attacks on innocent people.

The horror that those 26 families are going through is hard to imagine. Hopefully, as a nation, we can find a way to prevent these sorts of things from happening.

My wife is a middle school teacher in a large school in a less than favorable neighborhood.

Events like these make me physically ill when I know that she has had three incidents of a student with a gun in school.
Two incidents occurred in the last month. Between her gangster kids and their troubled parents, I often fear for her safety.

Fortunately her admin and the city take security seriously. A police officer, detailed or off-duty, is always at the school.

Prayers up for the families and the community that had to experience such an act of evil.

Many schools have fences around the school and two doors to the office, one of each side of the fence so people have to go through the office to get on the school grounds. Doesn't help the office staff, but an alarm could be sounded for a lock down at that point and it would save the students. I guess a 20 something year old kid with guns could always find a way to hop the fences or just shoot through them.

We recently had a member of our district go to a shooting/training for prepping for a "fire alarm sniper". Someone is on the roof with a rifle and someone else pulls the fire alarm. The entire school files out into the field where they open fire on the students from the rooftop. Scary thought. Things were brought up like numbering classrooms on the rooftops, so the police helicopter could find locate them easier. By that time, dozens of students would be dead.

Really, I don't see a way to ever really prevent something like this from happening. There's always going to be a way to get within shooting range and there's always going to be a time of day where a third of the school is out at recess running around in the open.

It's not just schools. I mean, this happened at a mall, the movie theater with the Batman movie, etc etc...as long as there are crazy angry people out there that don't care about life (which will be forever), no matter what people do about gun laws or tv or videogames, etc etc, stuff like this is going to happen.

Guys,

I just had to delete a post, and we have edited a few here as well. This is pretty simple. Be respectful to the victims and other iboaters.

Thanks.

As a parent of two young boys ( 6 and 8 ) I can tell you that this is more than tragic.

I cant remember the last time I completely shut down on something. But I cant take this emotionally. Its simply unbearable to even think about little ones being taken from us. Its almost like I can Feel the heartbreak of those parents. It makes me think that "what if it was my kid(s)". .. Sorry It hurts too much to think about it .. So I have to shut it down.

Such a loss for words ..
