I was out on a big lake today in my ?73 Silverline with a 165hp Mercruiser and after about ? hour cruising along just fine, the motor just coughed once and died and I couldn?t get it restarted. It would crank but not start.
Not much boat traffic other than kayaks and sailboats so I dropped anchor and after awhile, a fisherman in a bass boat came by and gave me a long tow back to the ramp.
After getting home, I checked the fuel filters and they seemed fine. As I had replaced the plugs, dist. cap and rotor a few days ago, I rechecked and all seemed good. I did not replace the points or condenser at that time but they looked fine. Tried to start and it still just cranked and wouldn?t fire up.
I have had this boat since the end of July and have only had it on the water 3-4 times before today and all of those were on a small lake with a 10mph limit on the weekends and 35 mph during the week and with the lake?s size, I could only run WOT for about 30 secs.
However, the first time I had it out, it did the same thing, coughed and died, but it started right back up and I attributed it to 1+ year old gas. The other times it ran fine.
Any ideas of what direction to start troubleshooting?
