What's a good one to buy? Anyone have a link to the compression testing for pull start motors?

Any thread-in style compression gauge. Just go to AutoZone and borrow one

Procedure is the same as with electric start. Don't make it complicated. Install gauge, crank motor till gauge doesn't go up any higher.
Hint: If you work on many motors, sooner or later you will find one where the cowling obstructs screwing in a hose-type gauge. This one takes care of that.
Hint #2: They all have some sort of a check valve to prevent the compressed air from escaping. Usually a tire-type valve. On a unit with a hose, make sure that valve is at the end that screws into the plug hole. If it is at the meter end, you will get false readings. Seriously false on small-bore engines. Harbor Freight is one example that has the valve on the wrong end on some of theirs.
