Procedure is the same as with electric start. Don't make it complicated. Install gauge, crank motor till gauge doesn't go up any higher.
Hint: If you work on many motors, sooner or later you will find one where the cowling obstructs screwing in a hose-type gauge. This one takes care of that.
Hint #2: They all have some sort of a check valve to prevent the compressed air from escaping. Usually a tire-type valve. On a unit with a hose, make sure that valve is at the end that screws into the plug hole. If it is at the meter end, you will get false readings. Seriously false on small-bore engines. Harbor Freight is one example that has the valve on the wrong end on some of theirs.
