Hi all,

I have a F15AMH outboard which i replaced gears in that is giving some issues with gears out of adjustment (not where they are supposed to be compared from the switch) that i figured out needs shimming.

Following the procedure in the manual i see i need the following tool, backlash indicator tool (PN 90890-06706 or
YB-6265)
Do you guys have any hints on how i can make one myself? And especially, what's the length of the measurement mark from the shaft?

Thanks!

Thanks! I tried looking for it on the shop but i didn't find so it seems hard to find.
How is it with the mercury one, will it have the mark at the same place as for the Yam?

Unsure if it's in the exact position, but lash is determined by the diameter of the pinion gear. Measure the diameter of the pinion gear, mount the Merc lash tool and take half that distance of the pinion and this is the place where the dial indicator goes. My guess is there is a mark on the Merc one that will work, or be really close.

Since i'm sort of in a hurry and shipping over seas would take too long (plus it would cost around 40 USD shipping included for a 19 $ part) i went the DIY way and asked nicely at some folks at a workshop and got this, may not be so pretty but it's functional! :)

So what i will do is:
1. Measure diameter of Pinion (the gear-part where it's the largest) and divide that by 2
2. Take the previous measurement and place a mark on the metal measured from the inner diameter of the clamp (then compare it to the merc one for curiosity)
3. Check the backlash
Thank you very much for the good explanation, i will try and update here how it went :)
