I am a green horn to boating so please bare with me. Ok there is a vacuum hose that goes down into the lower motor unit. When the marina was putting my boat into the water the hose popped off. Water got into it before I got to put it back together. Can this be a problem? And what is the hose for? Thanks in advance for any help.

I think that is probably a hose for your speedometer. Nothing to worry about.

Ok so that explains why my speedometer is not working. Anyway I can fix this without pulling my boat out the water?

You are probably going to get wet but you just have to push the tube back onto the barbed fitting.

I don't have your engine s/n but look at item 3 in this link:

Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. - GEAR HSG (DRIVE SHAFT)(STD. ROTATION) (S/N-0G437999 & BELOW - 135/150/175/200 XR6 MAGNUM III 105-140 JET

That is the tube going into the lower unit and if you increase the size of it, you can see the barbed fitting. Just take the tube that goes forward to the gauge and re-connect it to the fitting.

Do you have the s/n of your engine?

Serial# 0G351686 I re-connected the hose but speedometer still didn't work. Can that be because water got into the hose?

Your s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - (200 H.P. (1996 ))
Serial No: 0G351686 Model No: 1200422SD

Parts and Service Bulletin list for s/n 0G351686:

Search Results - Crowley Marine

The service manual you require is 90-824052. If you do not have this manual. see my message to you in Notifications at the top of this page.

The lower tube has water in it anyway but you may have to drain it completely before putting it back in the water. If you feel along the front end of the LU, you will find a very tiny hole where the water enters the lower tube. This water does not reach the gauge, it pressurizes the air in the forward tube and this is what causes the needle to move.
