Re: 1968 Larson All American

was told it needed a new floor, the strap is to keep the transom from sagging? so the transom is bad, i really like this hull it came with a newer trailer and has been repowered with an 85hp evenrude that seems to be in real nice shape and new steering trailer needs tires but otherwise in good shape with a new jackstand/front wheel.

Re: 1968 Larson All American

all the wood is rotten really rotten i removed it all and the foam using a shop vac, hammer claw, chisel, and hooked wrecking bar. I used an angle grinder to cut the inner transom skin out as it was thin and flaking off during wood removal

not sure how many hours i have in this but i put down many layers as i don't want to do it again, i've observed a few things that were'nt done right in the first place imo, so i'm fixing them hopefully with a little over engineering.

If you want to keep her, she is restorable but it will take some work and $$$$. About $1,000 bucks and she'll be like a new one. Lot's of examples here on the forum. Lot's of help to guide you. All depends on if you want to or not.

Re: 1968 Larson All American

well i have the transom, stringers, and floor replaced, the boat feels solid now when i'm climbing in and out no more jiggle to it, put the motor back on so i could lay out the routing of the controls, have to pull it back off now to install transom tubes, what should i use to seal the bolt holes? the PO had what looked like plumbers putty inside and silicone around the outside. installing a new bow eye how to seal this?

i'm working on the Larson today glassing in my locker and bench seat framework using 1/4 ply to keep down weight. when i did the transom i removed the zinc. what is it for and is it just screwed on?

Re: 1968 Larson All American

The zinc is a sacrificial electrolysis device which IMHO is not needed for a trailer boat. Greater risk is screw penetrations in outside transom skin that creates a path for water/rot. I say ditch it and seal up the holes.

In response to your previous question about sealing holes, the generally accepted recommendation is use 3M 4200 for anything that may need to be removed in the future and 3M 5200 for a more permanent seal. If your old bow eye hole has been damaged by movement, you might want to completely fill the hole with white Marine-Tex epoxy putty and re-drill it. Good luck with that classic old boat!

Re: 1968 Larson All American

thanks, this is gonna be a trailer boat so i think i'll ditch the zinc, the old bow eye rusted and broke off i was able to push the remaining bolt out without hurting the holes so i guess 3m 5200 on the bow eye and 3m 4200 on the outboard bolts in case i ever have to pull the motor
