1974 mercruiser I/O overheat

I have a 1974 mercruiser 140 H.P I/O sterndrive, i just bought the boat and hooked it up to the hose and ear muffs and it overheats. I am not sure if it is sucking water up or not. I am 21 and this is the first boat i bought could someone please help!

If there is WARM/HOT water coming out of the exhaust ports/propellor...then it IS "sucking up water", but maybe not enough to cool the engine.

The more details you provide the better those "in the know" can help!
