it's an aluminum boat in great condition. it currently has a short shaft transom though. i want to make it a long shaft transom and that would mean me welding some aluminum to increase length. then rebuilding and adding reinforcement and such splashwell etc.

it has a 50hp motor that seems a bit slow. 1961 merc500. and it's starting to run it's age. put quite the hours on this puppy.

i want to put a 3 cylinder evinrude johnson 70hp on it.

the boat is currently rated for 45hp.

i believe the hull is well built and it's all riveted aluminum. no wood except for the transom. it handles well in rough but it is bumpy.

as you can see in this picture i would like to weld some aluminum to make it a long shaft

so i'm basically looking at about 230-260 depending on whether i get PT&T or not. i think i'm ok on the weight.

what do you think for a light weight aluminum boat top speed with a 70hp?

i wanted the boat to be able to sit lower in the water.

i think ill skip on the 70hp engine.

i might go 48hp 50hp 55hp 60hp evinrude johnson.

prefer the 60hp. i'm going to keep to a 2 cylinder model seeing as the most they weigh is less than 200 pounds. i think? 70's up to 1985.

not sure whether i still should make the boat a long shaft?

I have what appears to be the same boat with the deck arrangement. Mine is rated for 40 hp though and the original transom was a sandwich arrangement with a thin sheet of aluminum inside over plywood bolted to the transom. I found a sheet of 1/4 aluminum plate with a 2 inch aluminum angle welded across the top which I used to make an all aluminum transom. I cut it out to fit on the outside of the transom and set the top fo the transom about flush with the deck (actually about 1" lower) which provides safety from back wash and allows use of a motor with longer shaft. The plate is boated with sealant between the plate and the original transom. I also added two aluminum knee braces from the transom which tie-into the back of the seat just forward of the engine area. Very strong set up and looks near original.

How about something like an RX-7 rotary engine hooked to a jet ski jet unit ??????? But I agree it would be a sin to cut into a hull
of a nice clipper ! It would be light, sit low, lots of horses for the weight. I say get a newer aluminum boat cheap ( a non antique )
and try it !!!! Have you seen the guy up im michigan who builds home made gas turbines and puts them in racing snow mobiles ?
He has then 100, 200 and 300 Hp !
If you want to how about building one of those brackets that hooks to your transom and lets the motor sit about 2 feet behind the transom. its like a transom extension. That could solve your depth issue without modifyiong your hull ! AND you could build it too !

One day (when I get mine in the water) I will see you on lake conway and race you !
