Ok so first off this is my first post in the forum. Seems like a nice place with helpful people.

So I just bought a 1989 Grady White 22 Seafarer and it has a evinrude 200hp vro motor on it. Upon first getting it many people told me that I should disable the VRO and run premix. I feel that this would be hard to do with a 90 gallon gas tank, am I right? Also the thing sat for 4 years so I'm expecting to do some maintenance. We did get the motor to start pretty easily actually and it seemed to be running pretty strong on all 6. What things should I look for as far as maintenance on a motor that sat for an extended period of time? Also what is the proper sequence to start the motor as there is a primer bulb and it has the primer solenoid at the key that I can activate. I do plan on getting a four stroke motor in the next year or two but if I can put off that cost for a little and get some use out of this motor if its not going to be a huge hassle then I'd like to do that.

Hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

i agree on going premix.
VRO still working.

To convert a still working VRO, disconnect the wiring harness to the VRO pump, also the harness to the oil tank.
You actually remove oil tank for more storage.

Now cut the oil line about 1 ? inchs from motor. Plug the oil line. I use a bolt and hose clamp.

Premix your fuel 50:1 TC-W3 outboard oil.

Disconnect fuel line to top carb, pump primer bulb, until you get mixed gas out of carb line. The gas will change color.

Connect carb line, go boating.

replace impeller in water pump. decarb the motor.

Really?? You think premix is a good idea on a boat with a 90 gallon gas tank? I just feel like that wouldnt be a very good idea. especially if I wanted to switch over to four stroke one day.

it is not the 90 gallon tank that bothers me. it is the VRO2 fuel pump, that is known to fail, in the mixing process. thus burning up you engine.

there are many big tanks that are premixed, you just add oil for the amount of fuel, you add. of course, you have to calculate what is in the tank now, and add oil for that fuel.

these are very handy for that. http://www.iboats.com/Seadog-Accu-M...18270172--**********.601391115--view_id.39804

I agree, disconnect it, as the VRO2 are prone to give up, and when they do, you'll need the four stroke sooner than you anticipate.
As far as maint. have carbs cleaned, replace water pump, and chech around the head gaskets for salt buildup, if this motor sat for 4 years, the gaskets could have dried out, and blowing a gasket will also get that new four stroke sooner.

alright well it sounds like disconnecting the vro is a good idea. what do you guys suggest I do when I go with a four stroke as far as cleaning out the premixed gas? Just emptying it and refilling with fresh be enough?
