First off Hello to all:
I have a project. I have read a lot on F-14's project and seen the pic's, Great
job F-14. I tore mine apart only to find some one had scabbed this before.
The stringers are pieces with cross members solid, I believe this is a week design. The wood is good 1 foot behind the cabin and I would like to tie in at
this point to the back, will a straight cut with support boards on each side
screwed together work or should it be an angle cut?
2nd. Should I peel back the glass and get it wood to wood? or could I leave the
glass, and glass it all together? If I leave the glass I will work the wood so all
is tight, kinda like a step joint. will this work? or should I peel the glass?
Little help please, Thanks in advance.

Your plan sounds good as long as you're certain that the stringers are good from the point behind the cabin-forward. In my boat, basically all the wood was wet including the cabin due to a leaking bow eye.

1. Arguably, with fiberglass, resin, and a "scab" a straight cut would be okay but personally I would make an angled scarf cut.

2. I would peel the glass back maybe 6-9 inches, put the existing wood and your new wood (with the scarf) and put them together with resin (I use epoxy) in a peanut butter like consistency. Epoxy your scab pieces as well, and screw them into the wood to bridge the old and new. Then encapsulate everything well with fabric and resin.

Any photos available?

Re: ?'s 1985 B-liner stringers

Sorry about the long time between post's. but been busy with the weather turning nice. (projects never end)
Yes i do have pics but am on dial up @ 26.4 kbs (live in the sticks) may take
longer to down load then fix the boat. Thanks for the reply, will look into angle
cuts. Going to pickup some wood tomorrow, i'll take some more pics and maybe head over to a friends house a borrow some band width for faster upload.;)
I am going to visit your project again F-14.
Be back tomorrow.

Thanks for the post back F-14, but I went back to your post and looked at those pictures before you had time to repost them. I am going to try this picture thing.

Sorry about the small size but like I said slow***** dial-up, live in the sticks.
You can see the wood crushing under the seats and the floor was pretty much a pile og rotten wood like you see under the tank area. here's a couple more.

Re: ?'s 1985 B-liner stringers

either "we" waaaay overbuild our boats, or Bayliner does a crappy job...your pix remind me of how the deck is just applied with resin to the stringers in a few spots. I've got screws (countersunk and all that), epoxy on the entire length, and epoxy where the edges of the floor come down on the hull.

You've got the right idea...cut until you get to solid, dry wood unless your boat turns out to be like mine, and the stringers are completely wet. Keep in mind that the factory encapsulation SUCKS. You know it sucks when you find foam in between the wannabe encapsulation and the stringers themselves

F-14, those pictures are not B-liner work, their some po. work.
Stringers and deck has been replaced once b4. If you look close at one
of the pics just behind the cuddy you can see the scab wood that was attached to the deck replacement on the port side.
(well if they were bigger and better resolution you could see it better.
I need to figure out this picture posting thing so I can get some big ones
like I've seen in other post's)

back to work, bedrest2

Re: ?'s 1985 B-liner stringers

deh what were you saying about my pictures?

anyway, I forgot to mention, be sure not to put a scab on the inside of your stringers if it's going to be beside the gas tank. I had to cut and grind it off because the tank wouldn't fit back in.

Re: ?'s 1985 B-liner stringers

F-14 I was just trying to say that I went back and looked at those pics before
you had time to put them in this post.
Looks like you are the only one that has any interest in this post/project.
Thanks for your time and interest, rest just seem to be gaukers.
All new where tank is, but thanks for the info, I will pay attention to where
scab wood will go to make sure no interference.
On another note, been thinking about putting live well in under port seat
next to motor houseing. I was thinking drain plug and external pump for
water that I could throw over the side to fill, then put into live well to
airrate water. Any thoughts?

I'm sure others are reading this...

I'm not familiar with making a livewell but I'd think it would basically be done with a good amount of fiberglass and probably gelcoat

As far as pics get a photobucket account. and post the img code in this thread.I hadnt see it yet or I would have done given a shout out.F-14 is doing one of the best jobs on flooring and stringers Ive seen on here.I got a project bayliner lurking here somewhere.Do me a favor and put the nose of this boat up in the air and fill the bilge with water before you take it to the lake.I didnt mine and she leaked like a shot bucket. Most of the bayliners I seen have rotten transoms which means youll pull the engine to repair.Check f-14s rotten mine was and so is a 90 something model thats on here.Check yours now to know where you stand.Good looking boat Im so glad to see bayliners getting fixed.I love them. What engine and drive you got in that thing.

Re: ?'s 1985 B-liner stringers

F-14, sorry if it came out wrong, po reference was to the work done previously
on my stringers. NOT your pics/work. I wouldn't do that, I'm electrical controls engineer, not a boat builder. Currently state of Michigan is paying for my time
on this project ( unemployed )

proshadetree, thanks for the pointer, but apparently they did do a good job on the transom, mine seems solid from checking.
Power is Volvo 2.1 liter with 270 out drive, no motor mounts, mounted by the
out drive housing (not much power, but boat is for fishing and very economical)

I did the thump test on mine sounded good.Didnt want to drill it.I did drill my stringers and they were dry as a bone.My leak was from the exhaust but when i tore back into it.I wasnt going to put it back together without knowing. What I found wasnt what I wanted.Fixing wasnt squat compared to what its done been through.Just wished I had done it the first time.If it has been replaced you are probably ok.Mine had never been touched.

Re: ?'s 1985 B-liner stringers

Here is an update to project. So far I have put up a 40 foot tower trying to get
high speed internet going, pulled out the fifth wheel and cleaned, dragged 5
gravel drive ways to fill in pot holes, maintenance on mow deck(grass is growing)
Oh yea, boat project? Got some grinding done.
Can I lay Poly resin fiberglass over tiger hair? that is what the last repair was
done with. Old stuff is ground down and feathered back.

I like what you have going on here. I started a new thread and couldnt get pics on the site. It doesnt really matter though because I am in the exact situation you are. I was thinking about leaving about two or three inches of class at the bottom of my stringers to make it easier to get them back in at the right spot. I thought that if i sanded and cleaned them really good I coule glass right to them. Epoxy sounds like it would be good to attach the old fiberglass to the new wood and then glass over the stringer to the hull. Still thinking on this one. Great job so far I am watching how you handle it so I can do it myself.

Merrymeeting, Check out my thread on fiberglassing Questions.
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=307319
One guy posted back that Polyester Resin does not stick to Epoxy so that
idea you have may not work. You may want to call whom you order from
to be sure. I think I will try the "peanut butter" mix every one talks about.
Check out F-14's Bayliner project (he has better pics then me, just learning
as I go, and some good info in that project) I had asked him to post the
peanut butter mixer and it's there if you want to read up on it.
Good luck (scratching as I'm typing, fiberglass is fun stuff)

Is it OK to fill voids with PL adhesive?
Here are my stringers.
