Buying a boat with 05 F225s - what to look for?

Surveyed today and had the lowers dropped. One looks good on the exhaust leg, but the powerhead shows corrosion. The other is the exact opposite.

Buying a boat with 05 F225s - what to look for?

Thanks guys. I’ve heard lots of opinions along the way. Some say, “if the exhaust was fixed you should be good for a few thousand hours”. Others have said, “if you’re past 7 years and no issues you’re probably good”. Still others have said, “once it starts you’re screwed. Don’t even bother”. I...

Buying a boat with 05 F225s - what to look for?

Hey all, I have negotiated a deal on a new to me boat with twin 2005 Yamaha 225s. I am very aware of the exhaust and thermostat corrosion issue. I understand the exhaust “fix” has been completed. The hydraulics on the trim have supposedly been replaced as well I am having the boat surveyed and...

1998 Mariner 200HP 2 Stroke Starting and Idling Issues

Check your spark. Mine used to be very temperamental. I replaced the stator (it was arcing to the block) and found a bad ground to an ignition module. Starts much easier and more consistently now.

01 Mercury 200xl Fuel Delivery Issue

It seems my outboard is taking a cue from 2020. Two years ago I replaced all fuel lines from the tank to the splitter at the oil injection and rebuilt the carbs. Didn’t use the boat last season. This season I replaced the filter twice as general maintenance, rebuilt the fuel pump (found a torn...

Gasket sealer on fuel pump gasket?

When I removed my mechanical fuel pump on my 01 200xl (carb) engine, it essentially fell off as soon as I removed the bolts. The first time I removed it a few years ago, I remember having to tap it a few times with a screwdriver handle to get it to release. When I reinstall, should I use...

    2001 200xl Fuel Pump

Hey guys, those who have been following along have probably seen a number of my posts regarding what seems to be a fuel supply issue. To date, I have tried running off of a remote tank, replacing the pickup tube, replaced fuel water separator and inline fuel filter, checking and/or replacing...

2001 200 xl fuel supply issues???

Ok, I give up. 200 carb’d 2 stroke. I replaced the stator a couple weeks ago because I noticed arcing coming from under the flywheel. It was hard to start and would stumble around 3,000 rpms. I fought my way through the link and sync and finally got that straight...or so I thought. Starts...

Link and Sync - #1 plug in or out and other timing questions?

I have seen various answers and suggestions on this topic. Doing a link and sync on 2.5l V6. The manual says to remove all plugs and insert a spark gap tool and ground all plugs. Others on the forum when describing the process say to remove all plugs except #1 where the pickup is placed...

    2001 Mercury 200xl Timing

Pretty much since I got this "new to me" 01 200xl I have had issues. End of season two years ago it was hard to start and ran rough. I assumed it was carbs so I rebuilt them. Better but not great. It would still begin to stumble around 2500-3000 rpms and was still hard to start. It also...

2001 200xl running hot and still having carb issues

What a lousy summer. This spring I rebuilt the carb’s due to a fuel issue I was having last fall. It seemed that the floats were all sticking. If you smacked them a few times she’d be fine but it got worse up until the rebuild. After rebuild she fired right up but was running hot. 180-200 on...

2001 xl head is pitted. Is it shot?

I was having some high temp issues (discussed previously) and ended up pulling the heads to check for a blockage - none found. The parts came this week so I started cleaning up the heads and found a lot of corrosion when I pulled the o-rings. I cleaned them out with a brass wire brush and was...

    2001 200 XL Carb Overheat

Rebuilt the carbs this spring and was going to put in today. Decided to run it one more time on the hose. Took a bit to get it started but once I did it ran fine. Let it idle maybe five minutes. It was “peeing” from the get go. Temp was up to 200. I remember more like 140-150 last year. What do...

    2000 v6 200hp Idle Speed

I have a carb'd mercury 200 that idles too high. On muffs it idles at close to 1200 rpms. Last year in the water it idled at probably 1000-1100. In gear I am probably 800-1000 rpms which makes shifting hard and docking a little dicey. Factory spec is 650. I just rebuilt the carbs and...

Fuel line sizes between carbs and powdery residue - Mercury 200xl

The carbs are clean and back together. I found the fuel lines were pretty hard and did not want to come off. I had to cut most of them. What size are the lines between carbs, and do they all need to be A1 rated? I believe one set of lines is from the "enricher", and I am not sure what the...

2000 200 XL Mercury Carb - Needle Settings

Last summer I picked up a new-to-me carb'd 200 XL. It was a running take-off that had been sitting for 3-4 months. After installing it fired right up. Prior to putting it in the water we tried again and had a heck of a time getting it to start. It would crank but would not fire. It was also...

    Volvo D4 rebuild

I found a supposedly rebuildable 2013 Volvo D4 locally. It evidently broke a ring and scored a cylinder. It was originally mated to an IPS drive. It sounds like I can get it for scrap value. Owner is repowering rather than rebuilding. I intend to find a bell housing and suitable transmission and...

    2001 200xl carb. Hard shift.

New to me 2001 200 xl. New cables, shifter is in good condition. I’ve put 3-4 hours on since the install, so I’m still working out the bugs. Tonight it was really hard to get out of gear. Have not had this issue previously. Thoughts? Having steering issues (posted elsewhere) so docking was...

Sea star system developed air in system

I took the boat out tonight and quickly realized I had no steering above idle speed. There were no stops in either direction. It was fine two weeks ago. No visible leaks. One fitting had a little oil on it but that may have been from the install a couple months ago. The only thing I can think of...
