    Zinc Chromate availablilty

I have heard from some retailers that ZC is outlawed by the EPA and no longer stocked. I did buy enough for minor painting recently, but I'm wondering if you've heard anything similar?

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/10/111028-condit-dam-removal-video/ It's hard to believe that after 100 years they were just now considering a fish ladder? Glad this dam is gone, many more to go to restore the spawning routes for these great fish:)

Helicopter down in Afghanistan, R.I.P. to the SEALS

Here's a link to an article about the incident. Devastating loss to our military...and more so for the families.:( I grew up with one of the SEALS killed. Same grade in school in a small town, both of our fathers coached little league, he was always the best athlete. I was not surprised to...

'71 Merc 800 lower unit mating issues

Having a tough time getting the lower to bolt up as it should. My understanding is that everything needs to be in FWD gear to do this correctly. Is this correct? The flywheel is spun to allow the teeth to lock in I believe. I'm also having difficulty getting it to fit around the black...

'71 Merc 800 water pump 3 bolts or four?

I'm in the process of reassembling my lower unit and had a quick question. 3 or 4 bolts? There are three that face upwards and a spot for one more bolt to be inserted. Of course I should know the answer since I took it apart but that's not the case.:rolleyes: My concern is that I...

    Scott Atwater Bail-a-Matic 10hp

There is a 10hp Scott Atwater available locally. It's $300 and I like the motor. I'm curious if these are show pieces at this point or can parts be found? It looks like it's an early 50s model maybe. I have a 12 footer that I could use the motor on, and the price is pretty reasonable if the...

'71 Merc 80hp idles, planes boat but no top end

I used the motor last summer and it starts up great, idles fine and will plane my 16' Starcraft out and top speed has been around 29-32mph. I didn't run the motor too much since I knew it had issues. After testing compression last night I might be willing to invest some cash to get it running...

    1996 75hp Merc known issues?

My dad is looking at a boat that comes with a '96 75hp Merc. From what I have found out researching it seems like they are 3 cylinder, carburated, 2-stroke with VRO injection. He is probably going to sell the motor so we want to make sure we know what we are dealing with. I am curious if these...

looking at a '72 Chieftain and '83 Islander

There's a tempting big piece of tin I've driven past on the way home from my son's school. I've been posting in the "nearly free starcraft" thread about her and finally got some photos. She is a 1983 Islander, Mercruiser I/O (unknown block size), she's been well-used as a fishing rig and her...

    Social Security withholding

My company just informed us that the percentage withheld for SS is being decreased by about 1/3 of the previous rate. Does anyone know what's going on with this? Anyone else have this happen at all? Not sure if we can talk about this and not be political but I figured I'd give it a shot.:)

Well it seems to be official...

For the first time since I've been alive, Starcraft does not appear to be manufacturing the Islander in any size. I think they started with the line in '68 or something, NB will correct me when he checks this thread:) Which should make all of those Islander owners out there happy to have...

Correct lifting ring for '72 Merc 800?

Will this work on my 1972 Mercury 80hp outboard? (link removed) The price is right...but I fear the part is wrong for a '72. Thanks for any insight. The seller does not provide very much info so it is difficult to tell if it would work.

Some good news in boat manufacturing

http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/11/23/820720/nc-boat-makers-expand.html It's nice to see some expansion out there after all the cutbacks and layoffs.:) Donzi, Baja, Fountain and Pro-Line are built by the firm. It mentions that aluminum boats and anything under 30' have been selling well recently.

Spar Varnish over Epoxy Resin for UV protection?

I'm considering brushing on a few coats of marine spar varnish on my epoxy-sealed transom wood(3/4" exterior ply w/ 2-3 coats of 2-part epoxy). This is for my 12' aluminum boat "The Loon" and I just need some UV inhibitors to protect the resin from what I understand. Any thoughts or experience...
